Laser-Cut Tokens Make the World Go ‘Round

Crash Bang Labs AGM Tokens

Crash Bang Labs AGM Tokens

Regina maker space, Crash Bang Labs celebrates it’s first Annual General Meeting with commemorative laser-cut tokens.

I highjacked Bill Wales original idea of a black acrylic coin, and suggested pushing the frivolous envelope with a toonie-ish design.

Our finished project is a token made with a laser cut 3mm thick black acrylic outer ring with “Crash Bang Labs Annual General Meeting” engraved on both sides. The 3mm thick baltic-birch plywood insert has “1st” on one side & the CBL logo on the reverse.

It was a labor-intensive endeavor to produce 40 tokens, Bill & I spent over four hours creating these gems.  The next batch will go much quicker as we also created jigs to help align the engraving of the tail-side of the parts.  About half of the time was spent on design and rest on actually cutting and engraving the tokens.

The AGM takes place today at 2 PM, at 2431 8th Ave (East side of The Exchange, North-most door).  Everyone is welcome to attend.  Immediately following the meeting we’ll move the festivities over to The Exchange for fizzy pops and grub.

Maker Shed Now Selling The Ultimate Useless Kit

The Frivolous Engineering Company Inc. is proud to announce that our flagship product:  The Ultimate Useless Kit is now available at Maker Shed.  This is a huge achievement for us, something we’ve been working towards for almost a year.

Maker Shed is the brick-and-mortar & on-line store for Make Magazine, one of the best sources for Do-It-Yourself information there is:

“MAKE unites, inspires, informs, and entertains a growing community of resourceful people who undertake amazing projects in their backyards, basements, and garages. MAKE celebrates your right to tweak, hack, and bend any technology to your will.”

Because Frivolous Engineering is located in Canada, orders going to the States are usually charged additional customs and duties. So if you live in the United States you’ll save time and money by ordering from the Maker Shed!

Currently, the Shed is only stocking the black version of the kit.  If you would like the clear case version, or a Parts Only Kit, or our Fully Soldered Machine you will still have to order directly from us.

Now Available in The Maker Shed

Frivolous is Going To Maker Faire New York

Maker Faire New York

The Frivolous Engineering Company Inc. is proud to announce that we will be an exhibitor at World Maker Faire in New York City, this September 29th & 30th.

We want to thank the kind folks at Maker Faire for not only accepting our last-minute application but getting us in The Maker Shed!

The Ultimate Useless Machine Kits will be sold at the Faire, and we may be demonstrating how we laser-cut the cases (& other parts) as well as showing how easy it is to solder the electronics.

So if you are in or near New York city we hope that you will attend the Faire and stop in at the Shed to say hello.

Regina HackerSpace Meet-up

Attention all you hackers, Makers and folks who like to tinker with technology:  a hackerspace is being formed in Regina!

CrashBangLabs is looking for people who are interested in helping get this off the ground.  The inception meeting will take place Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at The Owl.

This is something I support and I urge anyone in the Regina area who is interested to surf over to CBL’s facebook page and sign up.

Useless Machine Advanced Edition

When Andreas Fiessler’s printer died, instead of throwing it out, he turned into an Advanced Useless Machine!

He’s mounted a servo where the print head would be, and is controlling everything with custom code running on a an ATMega8 and a couple of other components.

So if one toggle switch is just not enough, surf over to Andreas’ web site for info on building this automaton.
